Groceries or What on Earth is costing so much?

OK, so the picture is a little blurry but I wanted to try something new. I am appalled at my grocery bill and wanted a new perspective. For the next several weeks I will photograph all my purchases and document them to get an idea of what I buy, where I buy it, how much it cost.

So here is my first one.  Total cost was a staggering $90.24

Purchased were:

2 lbs. of Amana ground beef (LTBA free) – $ 11.36
2 wild rice stuffed pork chops – 2/$4
3 (1.3 lb) Apples – $ 2.02
Gold Yukon Potatoes (3.1 lbs)  – $ 3.07
5 lbs Organic Carrots (yes, we eat that many) $ 4.99
Grapes (1.66 lbs) – $ 4.13
1 bunch Green Onions – $ .59
Snow Peas (.19 lbs) – $. 95
1 Zucchini – $ 1.01
1 head orange cauliflower (on sale) $ 2.49
1 loaf 15 grain bread (treat) – $ 3.19
1 Barilla Pasta – $ 1.49
1 Hy-Vee Pasta – $ 1.58
1 Box of Brownies Mix (for School lunch) – $ 2.88
1 tin curry powder – $ 4.99
1 jar Plum Sauce – $ 3.99
1 jar Thyme – $ 4.49 (probably returning it, and buying bulk)
1 Jar Organic Vegetable Better than Bouillon (so worth it, and it lasts about 8 -10 weeks) – $ 6.69
2 bags Potato Chips  – 2/$6
1 box Archer Cookies (car trip) – $ 3.19
1 box Organic juice boxes (occasionally in son’s school lunch pack) – $3.48
1 Stonyfield Organic Yogurt – $ 4.99
1 box of 10 Wheat Frozen Waffels – $ 3.28
1 Box Tampons (ok, those don’t count)
2 boxes Low Salt Triscuits – 2/$4
1 Box Alphabet Cookies – $ 1.39

What is in here is a higher amount of processed items than usual. But still. Ouch!!!! The spices, bouillon, Plum Sauce, don’t get eaten all that quickly, but still add considerable cost.  For us ground beef isn’t a budget food, but rather a luxury-convenience item because we only buy the kind which has no lean textured beef additive aka pink slime added to it.

Comments are very welcome as I try to analyze and overhaul my family’s grocery budget.

One response to “Groceries or What on Earth is costing so much?

  1. Even taking into account the fact that we have 2 teens who are constantly hungry and 5 growing kids altogether, the price of many things has increased. Our weekly budget is close to $350. I will be watching this and taking away any and all good ideas!
